Graduate Admissions Information for the Year 2005

Admission to educational programs at San Francisco Technical University is evaluated by an individual basis. The overall admission criteria for the University are based on the entire record of the applicant and availability of departmental resources. The items considered include holding a four-year baccalaureate degree or higher from a college or university of recognized standing (i.e., degrees from institutions outside the US are evaluated for equivalency to US degrees), letters of recommendation, professional and/or academic experience, promise of ability to pursue advanced study and research satisfactorily, adequate preparation to enter graduate school in the specific discipline or field of study and a Statement of Purpose Essay. In addition to the above University admission requirements, some colleges, departments and programs require indicators of success, such as a portfolio or personal interview. Each applicant is directed to check the specific program admission requirements.

Graduate Requirements for a Complete Application

Application Form
(preferably submitted electronically)

Apply on-line.

Application Fee

A nonrefundable application fee of $50 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents, or $75 for international applicants, is required to process an application. The application fee may be paid by check, money order or approved credit card.
Checks or money orders (U.S. dollars) should be made payable to San Francisco Technical University. Checks or money orders are accepted provided they display an agency bank in the United States and have magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) routing numbers at the bottom of the check.
Applicants wishing to pay by credit card may do so as part of the online application process or by completing the credit card portion of the paper application form.
The $50 fee required of U.S. citizens or permanent residents may be waived, but only in exceptional cases for low-income applicants. In such cases, applicants are to submit a letter from their financial aid advisor or other knowledgeable officer that verifies the need for a waiver. Waiver of the $75 international application fee is not available.

Official Transcripts and Records

Submit official transcripts required from each senior-level post-secondary institution attended. An official statement of the award of the degree or diploma is required for each degree completed.
Institutions that use the national ANSI ASC X12 transcript format (SPEEDE) prefer to receive transcripts electronically. Many universities can use the electronic format. Electronic transcripts can be processed much faster than paper transcripts.
If the institution cannot use this format and you have attended an American or Canadian college or university, two official transcripts are required. Please ask each registrar to enclose two copies of your transcript in a sealed, signed envelope addressed to you. Include this envelope with the seal unbroken and the registrar's signature intact with your application.

If the transcripts or mark-sheets are from a university outside the United States, they are to be signed by the registrar, controller of examinations, or president of the university issuing the document. Official records are to be in the language of instruction, accompanied by official translations in English, if necessary. Translations sent directly from the institution attended or from a recognized translator are considered official.
Consolidated mark-sheets are not considered official. Please ask the registrar to send individual mark-sheets that list grades earned in each term.
Photocopies or other duplications of a transcript, such as notarized copies and faxes are not considered official.

The Office of Admissions and Records evaluate applications and required items. The evaluation includes:

Calculation of the GPR on the last 60 hours of undergraduate work earned at senior-level institutions if the applicant has or is receiving a bachelor's degree and has less than 30 hours of advanced work in a degree program.
Calculation of the GPR on all graduate course work, excluding non-degree courses, if an applicant has a master's degree or higher or at least 30 hours or estimated equivalent of advanced work in a graduate degree program. (Note: Plus and minus grades are not used in calculating a GPR. In instances where a school used such terms as pas, credit, etc., a GPR cannot be calculated. The file will be forwarded to the department for processing under the "Exception" category.)

English Language Proficiency Verification through official TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer based) or higher taken within the last two years, GRE Verbal score 400 or higher taken within the last five years, or GMAT Verbal score 22 or higher taken within the last five years. San Francisco Technical requires an official copy of your test scores for you to meet the English Proficiency requirements;
English Language Proficiency Certification by taking the English Language Proficiency Examination (ELPE) prior to registration for the first semester at San Francisco Technical;
English Language Proficiency Certification by receiving a Baccalaureate degree following four years of study at an accredited U.S. institution; or

Students who will be serving as Graduate Assistants–Teaching (GAT) must complete the English Proficiency Certification Process at San Francisco Technical or show that they have completed an equivalent program at another U.S. institution. All other international students may demonstrate their abilities in English through English Proficiency Certification or Verification.
